  Rocking Horses

Selecting a Rocking Horse

Think carefully when choosing your rocking horse, they're built to be around for a long time! There are a  number of options available, we are here to help you get the rocking horse that best suits you and your family. The main decisions to be made are size of horse, type of stand, type of saddle and colours.

Every horse develops its own character when it's carved, all portray a friendly, non-threatening face. They come complete with real horse hair mane and tail (artificial hair is available if requested), name plate, a choice of saddle types and a leather bridle. You can also have a small horse with a carved mane, tail and saddle rather than with horse hair and leather. An example of this horse is shown to the right.

The horse and stand are available in natural wood tones, in a darker finish or painted in the colours of your choice.

We make three sizes of rocking horse; small, medium and large. We can also make other sizes as requested, for example an extra large rocking horse 150mm taller than the large or a doll size rocking horse. Follow the links to look at the characteristics of our small , medium and large rocking horses.

SMALL ROCKING HORSES

Key Characteristics

  • This rocking horse has been designed with very young children in mind and is built to be as low to the ground as possible.

  • This childrens' rocking horse is very stable which allows them to easily climb on and off.

  • It is suitable for a child from approx. 18 months to 5 years. This definitely depends on the child, as some children are "ready to ride" earlier than others.

  • The horse stands 31 in (780 mm) high from the ground to the top of the ear, and 25in (640 mm)
    from nose to tail.

  • It is available with a nailed on saddle in black or brown, a saddle blanket in a variety of colours. We do not use a removable saddle or stirrups for this horse because of the age of the children it is designed for.

  • Horse hair mane and tail or carved wooden mane and tail

  • Complete with nailed on leather bridle (no reins).

  • Brass name plate - choose your horses name when ordering

Stand types:

The rocking horse can be mounted on a swing stand made from solid timber with turned poles, or on traditional bow rockers. We make bow rockers with or without a step. The main differences between the bow rocker and swing stands are aesthetic so it is personal preference as to what you should choose for your horse. We have tried to outline the difference below:

Bow rocker:

  • Easier for younger children to rock than a swing stand, although  a swing stand doesn't take long to learn.

  • Can move around or bump into furniture if ridden vigorously

  • More traditional style

  • More durable than a swing stand as there is no moving parts.

  • Other people in the vicinity can possibly have their toes trampled.

Swing stand:

  • Horses and stand will not move around when ridden

  • Needs less space than a bow rocker

  • Some people prefer the look of the stand with turned poles

  • Moving parts, although we use stainless 10mm swing irons and nylon bushes at the point where there horse swings to reduce wear.

Saddles:

All saddles are made in leather and come in either black or brown.

The Western saddle is an actual child size saddle and comes complete with leather stirrups and a sheepskin lining. The western saddle will only fit on a large rocking horse.

The English saddles are all made by a qualified saddle maker to ensure they're strong enough to handle the rough riding some youngsters give them. The English saddle comes complete with nickel stirrups and a saddle blanket.

The nail on saddles on the small horses are a simple leather saddle with saddle blanket. We don't usually use  stirrups or reins on the small horses because of the age children they are designed for.

There are a range of saddle blanket colours available.
